VOLUNTEER INSTRUCTORS NEEDED
Home Repair Resource Center is seeking current or retired professionals and tradespeople willing to teach classes on a volunteer basis that instruct homeowners in specific repairs.
The classes are provided through HRRC's Project Repair program, which offers “hands-on” instruction in a variety of basic home repairs, especially jobs that can be done early enough to prevent expensive repairs down the line. By practicing with appropriate tools and techniques, workshop participants gain knowledge, skills, and confidence in their ability to tackle the repair. Past workshops have ranged from repairing doorbells to installing water heaters, from replacing porch flooring to leveling sidewalk blocks. Participants pay a modest fee to help offset program costs; those within low-moderate income guidelines are eligible to borrow tools from HRRC, allowing them to follow up the class by doing the repair at their own home. HRRC’s Teaching Center can be utilized for workshops, as appropriate, or the classes can be held “on-site” at a private home in Cleveland Heights.
For each proposed workshop, the instructor will define a topic; work with HRRC to determine the class location; detail the skills that will be taught; develop a cost projection; and list any tools needed for the class from HRRC’s tool inventory. Once the proposal is approved and the workshop scheduled, HRRC will publicize the class in our newsletters and other printed materials (listing the instructor) and on our website (providing a link to the instructor's business website, if desired.) The instructor will be reimbursed for materials used at the class.
We hope this opportunity will be a “win-win” situation for both Home Repair Resource Center and our instructors – HRRC will be able to expand the classes we offer to community residents through our Project Repair program, and the instructor will benefit from increased exposure to potential customers and/or an opportunity to give back to the community. We invite any potential instructors to arrange a time to tour our facilities, to see the teaching space and tools we can provide.
More information concerning the instructor’s responsibilities and the proposal form to be submitted are listed below. Please feel free to call Home Repair Resource Center at (216) 381-6100 with any questions.
The instructor will:
- Propose a workshop on a specific home repair and complete a Volunteer Workshop Form for that class.
- Work with HRRC to identify an appropriate site for the class--either at HRRC’s Teaching Center or at a private home in Cleveland Heights, where the homeowner will pay for the materials.
- Purchase materials and supplies for the workshop.
- For any “on-site” workshop, instruct the homeowner on any preparation work, permits needed, and/or follow-up work required.
- Consult with HRRC on instructional materials to be provided to attendees and tools needed from HRRC's Tool Loan inventory.
- Teach the workshop in such a way that participants have the opportunity for hands-on practice and develop confidence in their ability to accomplish the repair being taught.
- Complete a reporting form after each class and submit it to HRRC along with receipts for materials purchased.
Home Repair Resource Center will:
- Provide reimbursement for any materials purchased by the instructor within one week.
- Publicize the workshops in its newsletter(s) and on its website, listing the instructor’s name and company name. HRRC will also provide a link to the instructor’s company website on HRRC’s website, if desired.
- Maintain a list of participants registering for the class (5 reservations minimum.)
- Make copies of any instructional materials.
- Reserve from HRRC’s tool inventory any equipment needed for the class.
