Keeping
Cleveland Heights
in good repair!

Project Repair

Project Repair is a program of Home Repair Resource Center. It offers many services to help with home repairs, whether do-self or contracted. Our educational programs are available to all Cleveland Heights residents, regardless of income.  "Hands-on" workshops are offered year-round, where participants learn and practice repair skills under the supervision of our instructor. (Take a Virtual Tour of our workshop where we offer classes.) Books, videos, and handouts on a wide range of repairs are available, and consultations with our instructor can be arranged as time permits.

Project Repair's newsletter, Nuts & Bolts, is mailed bi-monthly to active program participants. It contains helpful repair tips, information about the services of Home Repair Resource Center, and a schedule of upcoming workshops. Check our Repair Tip of the Month for a sample of the information provided in the newsletter.

Tool Loan Program

Project Repair's Tool Loan is a special service available to LMI residents of Cleveland Heights.  The tool loan has many tools commonly used for home repair and yard work that participants can borrow. Instructions on how to reserve the Project Repair tools, tool costs, and the rules and responsibilities are listed below. The tool inventory  lists the tools which are currently available.

HOW TO BORROW TOOLS:

1. CALL AHEAD TO RESERVE YOUR TOOLS.

You can reserve the tools you need by calling Project Repair at 381-9560. If we're not in the office, leave a message on the answering machine, and we'll call you back. REMEMBER—if you call first, you can ask which tool is the right one for your job, and know that it will be in stock and ready for pick-up when you come!

2. PICK UP AND RETURN TOOLS DURING PROJECT REPAIR'S TOOL LOAN HOURS:

"Walk-In" hours for tool pick-up and return
9:00 - 12:00 noon
Monday through Friday

Other times are by appointment only. We're generally open an evening or two during the week (and on Saturday mornings during the summer) for tool pick-up and return, but you must call during our regular tool loan hours to make those arrangements. If it's possible for you to come during our morning hours, we ask that you do so.

3. ARRANGE YOUR OWN TRANSPORTATION FOR THE TOOLS YOU BORROW.

We cannot bring tools to you or pick them up from your home. We have straps to secure ladders on top of your car (bring a blanket to protect the paint job), and ramps to help load heavier tools. If you will be unable to load the tool yourself, plan to come when our Tool Loan Assistant is here, or bring another person to help you.

COST OF BORROWING TOOLS:

A DEPOSIT must be left when a tool is borrowed. The amount varies with the value and/or type of tool borrowed. Unless otherwise indicated, the deposit may be paid by check or in cash.

A modest FEE is charged for each tool or tool kit borrowed, whether or not the tool is used. The fee can be paid out of the deposit when the tool is returned, so long as it is on time and in good condition. Tool fees are used to keep tools in good repair.

RULES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF TOOL BORROWERS:

So that all participants may benefit from the tool loan program, the following rules are necessary:

1. The tools are for the use of Cleveland Heights homeowners who fall within federal low- and moderate-income guidelines. You may use the tools only on your own property; they are not intended to be used as a means of earning a living.

2. You may borrow a tool for up to one week, unless a shorter loan period is specified in the fee schedule. If you need to keep a tool longer, you MUST call the office to make arrangements to do so. Extensions are given at the discretion of the Project Repair staff, and depend mostly on demand for the tool.

3. If a tool you borrow is broken or damaged through misuse or neglect, or if it is lost while in your possession, you will have to pay for its repair or replacement. (Please note that you are responsible for asking any questions about the safe and proper operation of the tool being borrowed–so, if you decide to use a tool in a way that was not discussed when you first borrowed it, we suggest you call first to make sure the tool is appropriate for the new project.)

4. All tools are to be returned ON TIME during regular (morning) tool loan hours, unless another time is arranged with the Project Repair staff. If the tool is not returned at the time agreed upon, a late fee of $1.00 per day may be taken from your tool deposit.

5. ALL TOOLS MUST BE CLEANED BEFORE THEY ARE RETURNED.
